LAY IT ASIDE
by Missionary Washington
Hebrews 12:1 – Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset [us], and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
If we are not mindful, we will become quite comfortable carrying baggage that we need to rid ourselves of. The baggage may consist of bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Ephesians 4:31 (NIV) says, “Get rid of bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior.” Psalm 37:8 (NIV) says, “Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret—it leads only to evil”. To get rid of means to refrain, put away, throw off, no longer do, and to stop doing. God’s Word states that believers are to not let this behavior be a part of their character or lifestyle. With God’s help, we can refrain from bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander.
Hebrews 12:1 encourages the believer to lay aside every weight and sin, and to run with patience the race that is set before us. However, in order to do this, we must know that it can be done. There are many witnesses before us who have not given up their faith and who have laid aside unrighteousness.
Abraham laid aside his own desire to do things his way.
Hebrews 11:8 tells us what was so amazing about this departure: “By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going.”
Joseph laid aside bitterness and disappointment
Genesis 45:2 tells us another amazing account about forgiveness. “Yes, I am your brother Joseph, the one you sold into Egypt. Don’t worry or blame yourselves for what you did. God is the one who sent me ahead of you to save lives.”
David laid aside sin and shame and sought God’s forgiveness
Psalm 51:10 tells us about repentance and accepting God. “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.”
It’s easy to keep doing the same thing over. It may even be easier to keep carrying age old baggage. But God tells us through His Word to cast our cares on Him because He loves us. (I Peter 5:7) Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.
Let’s enter this new year with a wonderful commitment to lay aside everything that will keep us from being all God wants us to be. God has a great plan for our lives. A plan that includes eternal life, if we could just lay aside our weights or sins and accept Jesus as our Personal Saviour (Jeremiah 29:11). If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (I John 1:9).
Prayer: Father God, today I ask you to forgive me of all of my sins and cleanse me from all unrighteousness. I ask you to come into my heart and be my Lord and Personal Saviour. Lord, help me to live a life that pleases you and bring praise to your name. Thank you for your forgiveness. In Jesus’name I pray Amen.
