Our Daily Bread
by Missionary Diana Washington
Give us this day our daily bread. Matthew 6:11
Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” Matthew 4:4 NIV
Organizing weekly and daily food choices for the family is not uncommon for most families. Whether its breakfast, lunch, or dinner the leading cook favors having a meal strategy. Having a meal strategy makes things much easier, saves lots of time and not to mention, the stress and strain it eliminates. Just think about it – a daily meal plan, can make everyone happy.
With this being said, a daily meal design for our spiritual life is also required. In comparison to having a natural meal plan, a spiritual meal plan will prevent frustration and worry and also give us peace that passes understanding and joy unspeakable. Our Heavenly Father desires us to consider His Word every day (Matthew 6:11).
Some people maintain that experience is the best teacher. This belief may have a bit of truth. However, God’s Word-when fully obeyed is really the best teacher. We can avoid a lot of headaches, heartbreaks, and failures when we obey God’s Word. Not saying that we won’t have trouble-but with this trouble we are equipped to handle it. Let’s consider 1 Corinthians 10:13, “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”
Just as we take time to feed our physical man, we need to take time to feed our spiritual man (3 John 1:2). Let’s take a look at what we can do to ensure we get our daily bread.
Seek God early
Psalm 63:1 O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is;
Keep our minds on God’s Word
Isa 26:3 ASV Thou wilt keep [him] in perfect peace, [whose] mind [is] stayed [on thee]; because he trusteth in thee.
Let God’s Word rule our actions
Psalm 1:2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
Read God’s Word often
I Timothy 4:13 Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.
Study God’s Word
2 Tim 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
God’s word is not to be taken carelessly. It’s better than our natural food (Psalm 19:9-10). His Words gives eternal life, strength, joy, and peace of mind (John 10:27-28). Let’s take and eat his Word (Ezekiel 3:3). It’s really our daily bread.
